Chores For Kids Aged 9-11

Chores For Kids Aged 9-11

The older your kids get, the more independent they want to be– and they usually try to show us that, too! This increased sense of independence is a great indicator of the types of household tasks and responsibilities that you can assign your kids as well. They should now be able to handle certain more complex assignments. This will help to foster that sense of independence and prepare them for doing these sorts of things in their future! If you are not already, this age group is also a good one for starting to reward them with an allowance.

Benefits of Chores for Kids

Chores are not something we assign to our kids only to get a little help around the house– though of course, that can be part of it! In younger children, these can help to develop crucial life skills such as hand eye coordination. Even older children can benefit from chores, especially because chores will help them to develop a stronger sense of independence and responsibility. It will also give them pride in a job well done. Plus, then your kiddos learn how to do things around the house, which is important for when they get older and live on their own!

If you have a younger child as well, it’s great for the younger siblings to see the responsibilities that their older siblings have. See Chores for Ages 2-3 and Ages 4-5.

What Are Good Chores for Kids Aged 9-11?

If you are trying to assign household chores to a children ages of 9 to 11 years old, bear in mind that they can do most of the chores that you can do. This means that they are capable of these tasks, but you should be sure to avoid overloading them, too! After all, you want to give your kids enough room to grow and to still be kids. You should still supervise them in these tasks, too, especially when they are doing them for the first time.

Take a look below for a roundup of some of the age appropriate chores I recommend for this age group!

Walking the Dog

If you have a family pet, you know that they are a lot of work! Your kids can help you out when it comes to the pets in your home, whether feeding them, cleaning up after them, or walking them! Walking the dog is a great activity for kiddos who are in elementary school or between the ages of 9 and 11 years old. It is also a great 2 in 1 chore because they are crossing something off your to do list while also spending time outside and getting some exercise! This may also make it one of the chores that they are more excited to help out with, rather than some more cleaning based tasks.

Bringing In and Putting Away Groceries

Another great chore that your children can help with is bringing in the groceries from the car, or helping to put them away– or both! You and your kiddo (or your multiple kiddos) can turn both of these tasks into a team effort. For instance, you can unload the bags of groceries from the car while your kid carries them inside. Or, when it comes to putting the groceries away, you can put the refrigerated items away while your kids help by putting away the snacks and nonperishables in the pantry!

This is a chore that gets quicker with the amount of people helping out, and then you can even reward your kiddos with a brand new snack from the grocery store for their help.

Vacuuming Out the Car

Our cars get pretty messy, and usually, a big part of that is because of our littles or our pets! They may drop food in the backseat or track in mud or dirt. So, a fitting chore for your children is vacuuming out the car so that it is spick and span again. Younger kids may find this too tricky, but it is a task that is well suited for those between the ages of 9 and 11– or your older kids, too!

Be sure to show your kids how to do it well, and you might want to stick around to supervise, too, since they will be working with electricity. While your kids are working on cleaning the car, though, you can keep an eye on them and work on another one of your outdoor chores!

Mopping the Floor

When it comes to mopping the floor, it is simple enough that you can hand it off to your elementary school aged kids. They will also be strong enough to wield the mop, which can sometimes be cumbersome and awkward. You should probably set up the bucket of soap and water for them, though, so that you have the concentration of cleaning solution that you like. However, if you show them how to do so, they’ll probably be able to set it up themselves the next time around!

Cleaning the Entire Bathroom

Your younger children should be able to wipe down the bathroom countertops, at least, but as your kiddos get a little bit older, they should be able to clean the entire room! This includes cleaning the mirrors and the toilets. Check in on them, since they’ll be working with chemicals to do this cleaning. For the most part, though, this chore is one that can be done pretty independently through an elementary schooler since it is so straightforward.

This one is particularly satisfying, too, because you can see a dramatic before and after. If you need to motivate your child, you can even take before and after photos to see what a great job they’ve done and make it more fun!

Sweeping the Garage and Driveway

If you have a garage, you know they get messy! A great independent chore would be to sweep the dust, debris, and leaves from the garage space so that it’s clean for whatever your family uses it for. You can also have your kiddos sweep the driveway, especially if you live in an area with lots of trees that leave more leaves and debris on your driveway.
