Chores for Kids Ages 4-5

4-5 years old is definitely not too young for your littles to help out with certain chores around the house! In fact, this is where you can allow them to do more tasks on their own, which they’ll love.

Chores can help to build confidence and independence in your littles, and it can give you a little help with your never ending to do list, too. It’s a win-win! Read on to learn some more about some of the age appropriate chores for kids ages 4-5.

Benefits of Chores for Kids

The first thing you may think of when you think of giving chores to your kids is that it will help you so that you have a little less to do every day. This is definitely true! However, chores can also be beneficial to your children. They can help in many ways, both emotionally and physically.

They can help in development by teaching your kiddos responsibility, independence, and giving them satisfaction with a job well done. They can also help with fine motor skills and other physical development. It’s important to remember that, depending on your kid’s age, though, they may not be able to complete these chores perfectly. That’s okay, as long as you temper your expectations!

What Are Good Chores for Kids Aged 4-5?

Once our kiddos get a little older, we can start to give them more complex chores or trust them to complete the household tasks with more independence! Plus, they can still do some of the chores that they were doing when they were 2-3 years old. They’re now older kids and more capable of doing these chores on their own, and doing the slightly more complicated ones by themselves, too! This is the time to give them more independence around your home, while teaching them life skills at a young age.

Take a look at some of my top daily household chores for younger children in the 4-5 age group.

Watering Plants

Watering plants is more of a seasonal chore, depending upon the climate where you live! However, that doesn’t make it one to write off. When it’s hot, watering the paints seems to be a constant chore, so it can be a great task to hand off to your littles. Plus, they may even think it’s fun! They get to be outside, and you can even turn it into a fun activity by putting them in their bathing suit, too.

Once they’ve watered the plants or, they can play in the hose or the sprinkler to cool off! Be sure to teach them how to water the plants correctly before you set them loose, though– otherwise you may end up with a very soggy (or too dry!) garden.

Cleaning or Organizing Their Room

This chore is one that upgrades upon one of the chores for younger kids 2-3 year olds. For smaller children, you can ask them to help clean up clutter in targeted areas. Simple tasks such as putting their toys back in the toy box, or straightening their blanket and pillows on their bed. Once your kiddos get a little older, a great chore for them is to clean up their own room and take personal responsibility for that space.

A way that you can make it more fun for them is to put on music to sing and dance along to as they get down to business! After all, don’t we usually work better when we have a good soundtrack or podcast on, too? You can even join them for a sing along or a dance party if you like! It’s a great way to teach kids while making chores fun!

Wiping Down Baseboards

Wiping down the baseboards is something that you can assign to your littles on one of your deep cleaning or spring cleaning days. Bending down to reach those spots can be a pain, but for our children, who are smaller (and probably more flexible than us, too!), it’s a piece of cake!

While you work on cleaning other areas of the house, your kids can be scrubbing away at the baseboards. You’ll need to show them how to set up their bucket of soapy water and supply them with rags (since they probably can’t access where you keep those), but otherwise, this is a pretty independent task that you can trust your 4 or 5 year old with.

Unloading Silverware from the Dishwasher

While your littles probably won’t be able to unload the entire dishwasher at this age, they can start out by taking responsibility for unloading the silverware. If they can’t reach the silverware drawer, give them a step stool and put them to work! This is a fairly quick chore that will still save you some time and help out around the kitchen.

Dishes are one of those chores that never seems to end, especially with multiple kids and adults eating snacks and meals at home, so you’ll need all the help you can get in this department!

Clearing or Setting the Table

Before and after meals, your kiddos can help you clean up or set the table. This can be helpful when you’re busy in the kitchen, cooking and preparing meals. Besides that, it’s also a quick and easy chore that makes it age appropriate!

Teaching your children to clean up after meals will also encourage them to be responsible for messes in other areas, too, such as the playroom or their bedroom. You may need to take out the plates and silverware that your children need to set the table, though, as they probably can’t reach the cabinets you store those in!

Matching Socks From the Laundry

Laundry is another one of the never ending chores once you have kids! So, if you can get a little help from your kiddos with this task, it goes a long way. Of course, a 4 or 5 year old can’t be expected to do loads of laundry by themselves, but they can help you once the laundry comes out of the dryer! One task you can assign to them is sorting the laundry before it gets folded. You can also have them go through and match their own socks, which will improve their cognitive skills, too.

Another task could be to have them bring all of their dirty clothes to the laundry room and sort the colours before they go into the wash. It’s a wonderful way to teach them about their colours at the same time!

A fun way to help keep track of your kids chores and keep them accountable to them is by having a chore chart. CHILDREN LOVE RESPONSIBILITY - YOU WILL BE SURPRISED HOW QUICKLY YOUR KIDDOS GET EXCITED TO CHECK OFF THEIR chore list EACH DAY!

with our fun chore charts, you can USE THE NOTES SECTION FOR SPECIAL EARNINGS - TABLET TIME, AN ICE CREAM DATE, THE TOY THEY’VE BEEN WANTING, MONEY, ETC! This chore chart is erasable so you can change it up every week with the same chores or new daily chores!
